Akaroa & Peninsula
Akaroa is a small holiday resort settlement 1.5 hours travelling time by road from Christchurch, travelling over an extremely scenic volcanic peninsula.
Akaroa, being a quaint and very picturesque village situated on the edge of an extinct volcano crater that has a history of both French and English influence in its layout and appearance. The area contains many places of interest such as boutique craft stores, quality restaurants and cafes, local history Museum, and specialty cheese tasting at a cheese factory located in the edge of the harbour.
For the more adventuresome one may take a cruise on the harbour, or alternatively visit the Giants House or partake in a leisurely walk around the historic village in general. In addition the day can include an Alpacca Farm tour (pre-booking required)
The journey to Akaroa includes travelling the now extinct volcano crater rims of both the Lyttelton and Akaroa harbours, and from the 475m (1500 feet) high vantage points along the way you will experience the many breathtaking views of the numerous bays located around the Volcanic Peninsula area.
